Fancy-schmancy Sunday brunch

Sunday brunch

Yesterday, while I was giving Pumpkin her first bottle of the day, Daddy-man surprised me with an unusual suggestion for our morning.

“Let’s have brunch,” he said.

I thought he was kidding at first. My husband is not really a brunch sort of guy. Grab a latte at Starbucks – sure. Pub lunch – definitely. Brunch – not so much.

“Brunch.” I repeated the word back to him with plenty of doubt – and a little bit of snark – in my voice. “You want to have brunch?”

That’s when he laughed and replied: “Yeah, I was thinking we could walk down to Asda, pick up a few things, then have brunch in the cafe.”

Ah, that explained it. Brunch at Asda. Fancy! Eh, we didn’t have anything else planned, and it was nice enough out for a little walk. “Oh, why not?” I answered and started to get the baby ready.

Ready to go out!

Once Pumpkin was bundled up and we were dressed for the outside world, we started the almost-two-mile walk. It was nice being out on a Sunday morning with Daddy-man – we haven’t gone on a long walk together in a while.

Fresh air, a bit of exercise and even some conversation without a TV or mobile phone or iPad in the mix – and since Pumpkin tends to be pretty content from the moment we put her in the pram, we didn’t have to worry about her too much either. Of course, she was included in our conversation.

She did not want to keep her hat on though.

When we got to Asda, we had a wander around the store – looked at clothes, Halloween costumes and baby stuff – then went to the cafe.

Since it’s a relatively new shop, the cafe is actually pretty nice. It has soft lighting, a natural colour scheme and comfortable furniture (although the first table we sat at was SUPER wonky. (sorry, I was a bad blogger and forgot to take pictures of the interior).

We chose our breakfasts – Daddy-man got sausage, bacon, hash browns and beans. I got a breakfast bap with mushrooms and coffee.

Brunch at Asda

The coffee wasn’t great, but the sandwich was delicious!

Best of all, Pumpkin got a FREE pouch of Ella’s Kitchen Banana and Peach puree. Although she’s probably actually on stage three by now, I opted for a stage one flavour from the wide range on offer.

Since we’ve been doing baby-led weaning, Pumpkin doesn’t normally get purees at all – she’s already too independent to let me spoon-feed her and she turns her nose up at all of the savoury purees that we’ve tried. So, I chose something fruity that I figured she’d eventually be persuaded to eat. As far as I could tell, fruity flavours are only available in the earlier stages.

“Mummy, why can’t I just eat it like this?”

I think Asda has done a really good job at catering to families in their cafe. The adult meals that we had certainly couldn’t be considered health food, but they were tasty and we probably could have made better choices if we had wanted to.

As far as the baby’s meal was concerned though, the free pouch of high-quality baby food certainly won me over (and she did seem to enjoy it once we got past her no-I-don’t-want-to-be-spoon-fed attitude).

Plus, there were plenty of high chairs available, as well as baby spoons and even disposable bibs. Older children also eat for free during the week and Asda offers plenty of fresh fruits as part of their kids meals.

Once we finished eating, we went back into the shop for another look around and to actually buy the things we came for. Then we headed back out for the two-mile walk home. All in all, a simple, enjoyable and cheap morning together as a family. We even got some shopping done.

  1. She is just so cute! I am dieting and so your food pictures made me drool! I think Weatherspoons is great for good cheap food. You just have to dodge the 10am drinkers! Thanks for linking up to #PointShoot x

    • We often eat out at Wetherspoon’s too – it’s ‘good’ for dieting since they include calorie counts on their menus… of course those counts are often pretty high! And, like you said, there’s the 10am drinkers. 🙂
