She’s officially a “toddler”

It has finally happened! She took her first step!

First step!

A couple of minutes after she took her step. Please ignore the mismatched socks…

I say “finally” because we’ve been convinced that she’d be walking any time since mid-November. “Maybe by Thanksgiving,” we said at first. Then, “Definitely by Christmas.”

When that didn’t happen, it was: “Oh, she’ll probably start as soon as we get home from holiday – just so everyone misses it.” As her birthday go closer, she showed a few more signs of becoming bipedal. “Wouldn’t it be wonderful if she started walking on her birthday?” Daddy-man and I asked each other.

Her birthday came and went, and there was still no walking. “Surely she’ll be on the move by her 13-month birthday,” But that came and went too. At that point, it was down to the wire. Who would be walking first – her or me? (I didn’t start walking until I was 13.5 months).

Now, I know all babies are different, and they all do things at their own pace. That hasn’t been a problem for me at all. It’s just that she’s seemed SO CLOSE for SO LONG.

Practising with the toy buggy

But, like I said, it finally happened on Wednesday. We’ve been out practising with her toy buggy nearly every day for about three weeks. I’m not sure all that work had anything to do with it, but at least it gets us out of the house for a little while.

Practising with the toy buggy

I was sitting on the sofa talking to her and she was standing a few feet away. Daddy-man was on the other side of the sofa.

She suddenly decided to come over to me, took a step holding on to the side of the toy buggy, then let go. But she couldn’t quite reach, so without thinking about it much, she shuffled over – just one little step, but she definitely did it.

I let out a gasp. Daddy-man looked at me: “Was that a step?” he asked and I nodded my head. Then we both started clapping and saying “Yaaaay!”

Pumpkin had absolutely no idea what we were going on about – why we were applauding her or what she did to deserve it. She looked a bit confused, then half-smiled and started clapping too. Kind of an “Eh, well, whatever,” moment for her.

First step!

“What are you two on about?”

There haven’t been any more steps since then, but I’m sure they’ll be here soon enough. I’ve said for a while now that I think it’s a question of confidence – and the fact that she took the step without thinking kind of confirms that. She just needs to be focussed on something else.

Anyway, I’m a happy mama. 🙂
