What’s the point of swim nappies?

When I first started taking Pumpkin swimming, I didn’t understand the point of a swim nappy. I mean, I understood that containment was important and that the swimming pool required them, but couldn’t I just use a normal nappy?

I never tested that theory – and I’m glad!

Because one day, I realised why you can’t use a normal nappy in the swimming pool. It would swell up to twice the size of the child in about 30 seconds (okay, maybe that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but you get my point).

Normal nappies are meant to absorb liquids, after all. It was a bit of a *duh* moment, but I bet I’m not the only one who has had it. 🙂

But do I really need to get swim nappies for my little one?

When we were on holiday, I forgot to bring swim nappies with us and I kept forgetting to buy them when we were at the supermarket.

That meant that when we went swimming, we had to take into account Pumpkin’s recent digestive patterns and pray to the swimming pool gods that there’d be no poop in the pool.

We were lucky – but I don’t recommend that sort of gambling. It takes some of the fun out of swimming.

But which swim nappy should I choose?

Well, we’ve tried a few different supermarket brand swim nappies, but I haven’t been impressed with them. One of them was pull-up style, which seemed great. Until there was poop in it.

Trying to get a poop-filled pull-up-style wet swim nappy off a wiggly and wet eight-month old baby was NOT fun and very messy (gross). I swore them off for good.

The other just didn’t seem to fit right.

Since then, we’ve stuck with Huggies Little Swimmers.

The people at Huggies have put a lot of thought into these swim pants and they have a lot of great features.

For one thing, they have a pull-up design but with sides that open and close too. This means that you have the easy-on of a pull-up but the easy-off of a traditional nappy.

The side panels on the Huggies swim pants are nice and stretchy, so that Pumpkin can splash and kick about unimpeded in the water.

Another benefit of the Little Swimmers is that they are absorbent. Not so absorbent that they’ll swell up, but enough that I can put Pumpkin in her swimming costume and head to the pool without having to worry about leaks. That means that much less faffing around in the changing room once we get there.

Of course, there’s also the cute Finding Nemo design. While Pumpkin doesn’t care about that now, I’m sure it won’t be long before she has been fully Disney-fied and wanting to wear her Nemo pants!
