Last week was a bit of a rough one. I was feeling rather pleased with myself last Sunday night, as I’d prepared pictures for three blog posts and I thought that would help me get all the posts done that I wanted to this week. The kitchen was also looking fairly clean and I’d even managed to prepare lunches for Hubby’s work week.
On Monday morning, I woke up and fed the baby. As I rocked her back to sleep, I grabbed my phone and opened up Facebook. That’s when I found a message from my mum, telling me that my grandfather had a massive heart attack and the prognosis was not good.
For most of my childhood, my grandparents lived with my family. I was much closer to them than most grandparent/grandchild relationships that I know of. I immediately knew what I wanted to do – be with my family. But I wasn’t sure if that would be possible since they live on the west coast of America and I’m based in London. Flights aren’t cheap when booking them well in advance; the chance of finding affordable airfare for a 6,000 mile journey the day before the trip seemed unlikely.
Luckily, I found a reasonable price and I spoke to my husband. He agreed that I should make the trip and he came home early to be with me and help me get ready. His parents were even generous enough to help us with the cost of the flights (in-laws aren’t all bad!).
I spent all day getting ready to go, trying to figure out what to pack for me, as well as the baby, and getting to grips with how air travel works with an infant – particularly when travelling by myself.
Pumpkin’s first transatlantic journey was supposed to be later this year. I’d already done a bit of research on what we would need to do and what we could can take. I called the airline to double-check our allowances as far as her pram and car seat were concerned and I managed to reserve a bassinet for the longest leg of the journey (nine hours and 40 minutes from Frankfurt to Denver). I’m not sure what time I went to bed on Monday night, but it was very late. And the baby, who must have sensed something was up, did not sleep well.
Our trip to the airport went fairly smoothly – except that I almost forgot my Oyster card and that my phone had some serious issues that resulted in me having to do a hard reset on it – thus losing all of my apps, data and photos. Luckily I had backed up my pictures the night before so at least they were all safe.

I’ll save the details of my journey for another post, but to sum it up in a few words: it was a long trip and Pumpkin was good as gold. Seriously, I’m still a bit shocked at how well she dealt with everything and she only cried once for about a minute. It was certainly difficult travelling with her and without my husband there to help me, but it couldn’t have gone any better. I just hope the trip home goes as well.
The rest of the week has been a bit of a blur and I’ve certainly not had my blogging head on. My grandpa came home from the hospital on Wednesday and is doing well considering what’s happened to his 91-year-old body. However, his health is still shaky and he has a lot of obstacles to get around to get back to health.
It’s been so good seeing my family though and Pumpkin got to meet not only her great grandparents, but several other extended family members – including many of my aunts, uncles and cousins. We still have a lot of visiting to do before we head home next week, but at least we’ll be back in a few months.
I’m so glad I got to meet Pumpkin and see you again. I’m crocheting as fast as I can so her legs won’t dangle out of the blanket I’m making, but she’s growing faster than I can make it!
It was wonderful getting to see you as well – and I’m glad she got to meet her Great Auntie Earth Pig. The blanket is gorgeous and I can’t wait to see it in real life!
