How to deal with nappy rash

Nappy rash is a pretty common thing for babies – but that doesn’t mean it’s okay for a little one to have it either. It must be so unpleasant!

How to deal with nappy rash

We’ve actually been pretty lucky with nappy rash in our house. Pumpkin has only had a couple of rounds of it – the first major incident was just after her first birthday, during a trip to Scotland.

I’m guessing it had to do with the long car ride up there, but we were a little under-prepared for dealing with it and by the end of the weekend, we were slathering all sorts of things on skin to try to clear it up.

Dealing with a flare-up

In the end, the best treatment turned out to a course of:

  • Thorough cleaning – Using warm water and a cloth, rather than wipes.
  • Fresh-air time – We laid her on a towel on the floor and put her favourite video on the ipad next to her – she’d lay still for a good half-hour to 45 minutes before trying to get up and crawl around.
  • Metanium – This is a yellow paste that contains titanium oxide, titanium peroxide and titanium salicylate. It cleared up most of the redness in a few hours.
  • Very regular nappy changes – Yes, it got annoying and a little expensive changing her nappy so often. But a clean bottom is essential when treating nappy rash.
  • Raw egg whites – Before we could make it to the shops to buy the Metanium, we tried this home remedy, which definitely seemed to help. It was a bit weird (and messy) putting the egg whites on her bum, but it dried to create a skin-like protective layer and did seem to be soothing too. A remedy to keep in mind if you’re in a pinch without anything else available.

Preventing nappy rash

While that flare-up in Scotland led us to figuring out a good treatment, we also wanted to make sure we were doing everything we could to prevent it.

After all, prevention is better than cure, right? When it comes to sore bottoms, definitely!

So, when I was asked if I’d like to review a tube of Sudocrem Care & Protect, I was happy to give it a try.

How to deal with nappy rash

We were already using the Sudocrem Antiseptic Healing Cream as our normal nappy cream, but this is a product specifically made for baby bums (the healing cream is more of an all-purpose product).

When the Sudocrem Care & Protect arrived, I was glad to see it was in a tube – I think that’s easier to deal with than a tub. Especially with a wiggly toddler who is quickly realising she can cause Mummy all sorts of bother by rolling around during changing time.

But, it was when I used the Sudocrem Care & Protect for the first time that I realised how different it was from the other nappy creams that we had tried. Its texture is more glossy and it creates a visible moisture barrier on the skin.

Actually, it reminds me a lot of what the egg white did – creating a skin-like layer.

According to Sudocrem, the Care & Protect product offers triple protection:

  • Creating a protective barrier that seals in the skin’s natural moisture and protects delicate skin against external irritants.
  • Conditioning the skin with vitamin E and pro vitamin B5 to help protect the skin and keep it soft, healthy and moisturised.
  • Guarding against infection, acting as a barrier to protect from the chemicals in urine and poo, as well as chafing and rubbing.

Sudocrem Care & Protect is also hypoallergenic and has been dermatologically tested. It is free from artificial colours and preservatives and won Product of the Year 2015 in the category of ‘Best Nappy Cream.’

We’ve gone through a good bit of the tube now, and I’ve been very happy with it.

How to deal with nappy rash

I can’t say that our house is a completely nappy-rash-free-zone since we started using it. We did have a (mild) flare up last week. But, I also don’t blame that on the Sudocrem. Sometimes it just happens.

In fact, I actually think the Sudocrem Care & Protect has helped us through the flare-up, protecting her skin and keeping redness to a minimum.

I would recommend giving it a go as a preventive product – we’ll definitely keep using it.
