A few weeks ago, the BBC had a programme on called Sweets Made Simple. The series, which starred confectioners Kitty Hope and Mark Greenwood, was only four episodes long, but it had me drooling from start to finish.
Only a couple of the recipes that they were things I wouldn’t want to make myself, and I’ve been day dreaming of fresh-made fudge, marshmallows and Turkish delight ever since. (Of course, I haven’t actually made anything yet…but I’m waiting until I can get the book from the series.)
Anyway, you can imagine how excited I was when we discovered that Miss Hope and Mr Greenwood have a shop in London. Hubby and I finally found a free Saturday when the trains were actually running into the city and we headed off to the sweet shop with Pumpkin in tow.
The shop is located in Covent Garden, but we got off the train at London Bridge and bought lunch from a sausage vendor at Borough Market. Then, we enjoyed a walk along the river.
The front of the shop is bright and cheerful, with a lovely red-and-white striped awning and a window display that will certainly get your mouth watering.
Meanwhile, the inside of the tiny shop has an amazing array of sweets to gawk at – from shelves lined with boxes and jars…
… to a countertop covered in mounds of chocolate.
Plus, a rack covered in lollipops of varying flavours.
I felt a bit overwhelmed by the range of choices and the busy shop wasn’t really ideal for manoeuvring the pram, so Pumpkin and I went back outside and left Hubby to pick out some sweets to take home.
A few minutes later, he emerged from the shop with a big red and white striped bag full of lovely boxes. I must say that all the packaging was really lovely – but it’s what’s inside those boxes that really matters!
Hubby’s favourites were the raspberry coconut ices. He said they were one of the best sweets he has ever eaten. I wasn’t a huge fan, but they’re not the type of sweet I would normally choose for myself anyway.
These little burst of yumminess, however were amazing. Chocolate truffles with peanut butter. They had a smooth and creamy texture and the PB flavour didn’t overpower the chocolatey goodness.
These mallows, which had a toffee-flavoured chocolate coating were also lovely.
Meanwhile, I felt like the box of toffees were a bit of a let down. The box contained chocolate, treacle and butter flavour and the treacle was definitely the best of the three, but I wasn’t a big fan of the texture. A little grainy and now chewy enough for my liking.
I’m sure we’ll return to Hope and Greenwood next time we’re in the Covent Garden area. And I’m really looking forward to getting the book from the Sweets Made Simple series so I can try my hand at candy making!
