It was less than a year ago that I decided to take the plunge and take Pumpkin to her first playgroup.
She was so little back then and happy to spend the entire session sitting in the ball pool, kicking her legs and gurgling.
It was the first time in months that I’d actually had the chance to enjoy a hot cup of coffee.
At that age, she was too little to sit in one of the chairs at snack time, so she got a high chair.
And, during music time she cuddled up close and fell asleep while the toddlers danced, played their instruments and ran around.
We’ve gone back to that playgroup many times since that first day in October – in fact, we usually go once a week.
And more than anything else, it’s these sessions when I see how she has grown and how much she has learned.
Now she can climb in and out of the ball pool on her own – although she’s not all that interested in it any more.
She can toddle to the activities she wants to do.
She can paint and glue with my supervision.
She can climb in and out of her snack time chair on her own.
She can help tidy up – when she feels like it.

She can climb the stairs to the big kids’ soft play area.
She roars when playing with dinosaurs, signs for “dog” and “cat'” when she has the animal figurines, sorts beads into bottles, pushes toy prams, sweeps and sits down to look at books in the reading corner.
And during music time? She’s up with the other kids, running around.
Not quite dancing yet, but shaking her tambourine and doing some actions like clapping, reaching up high and touching her toes.
I occasionally get a cuddle off of her during song time. But it’s a quick one now – she’s very busy after all! And she never falls asleep on me anymore.
And what do I do now? I sit back and marvel at how she’s turned into a proper little person. She has her likes and dislikes. She knows what she wants and she’s learning new skills every day.
It’s during music time that I re-realise, week after week, that my little girl is already growing up and how fast the time goes by.
And that’s when I bite my lips, wipe away a tear or two and feel like a bit of an idiot.
🙂
Aww! Bless you and her! They grow up so fast don’t they….
She is such a cutie! You must be so proud of the little lady she is becoming x
I really can’t believe how fast she’s growing. I look at pictures of her from a year ago and she was so little – I have trouble even remembering her being like that!
Join the crowd. You’re a mum. It will always happen…even 34 years later.
