I’ve decided to do a new weekly feature on my blog, sharing one of the books we’re currently enjoying at home.
The book that inspired me to do this is this one: Noisy Bottoms.
We found this book at Mothercare back in February when we were shopping for a new pushchair. The book was sitting on a random shelf in the clothing department and Daddy-man spotted it. He brought it over to show it to me and we were both giggling like school children as he pushed the buttons along the side.
You see, the story is about Baby Bear going on a walk through the woods with Daddy Bear.
And everyone in the forest must have had hummus or beans on toast or five-bean chilli for dinner the night before, because all the woodland creatures seem to be having some serious flatulence issues.
Everyone, that is, except for Baby Bear. He, quite frankly, is scandalised by the things he’s hearing.
Anyway, each of the buttons corresponds with one of the animal’s *ahem* digestive sounds.
And, boy, do these animals have some digestive sounds! Some of them are almost musical.
Actually, come to think of it, they might all want to consider seeing a doctor, because this sort of thing isn’t normal.

Not normal, but hilarious.
While the sound effects are great, they’re not the only reason I love this book.
It’s a board book, and it’s very well made. It seems very sturdy and has survived some fairly rough treatment from a one-year-old who doesn’t really understand that books aren’t for standing on or eating.
The illustrations are also really lovely. There’s so much detail in the images and there are lots of animals in each picture, so I can point them out to Pumpkin – most of the animals I know the sign for too, so we can practice our signing with it.I also really like the tabs at the top of each page. It can sometimes be difficult turning the pages of a board book, but the tabs make it easy. The image on each tab and the background colour also correspond with the sound effect button you’re supposed to press for that page. So, top marks for user-friendliness too.
Overall, Noisy Bottoms is a fun little story with lovely illustrations and sounds that still make me giggle sometimes. It’s probably not great for bedtimes, as it’s a bit too silly, but we definitely enjoy reading it during the day.
Noisy Bottoms is illustrated by Mark Chambers and published by Usborne. If you’re thinking of buying it, why not do so by clicking on the image below? It will take you to Amazon.co.uk and I’ll get a very small commission on the purchase.
What a great and funny post. That book sounds brilliant, maybe one that Pumpkin will enjoy for a few more years!
Sounds like the kind of book some of the young boys in my class would be giggling at too.
Beautiful photo of Pumpkin too.
Amanda.
Ha! I bet little boys would love this book. My 34-year-old definitely enjoyed it. 😛 (I mean Daddy-man, of course) hee hee
